Embroidery & Patch Resources
Plain-English explanations of the terms and decisions behind good embroidery and well-made patches.
Digitizing Glossary
- Stitch direction
- The angle thread runs within a shape. It affects how light reflects and how shapes read.
- Underlay
- Foundation stitches sewn first to stabilize fabric and support the top stitches.
- Density
- How closely stitches are placed. Too low shows fabric; too high can stiffen or pucker.
- Sequencing
- The order elements are sewn. Good sequencing reduces color changes and misalignment.
- Pull compensation
- Slightly widening shapes to offset how thread pulls fabric inward.
- Trims
- Commands that cut thread between separated elements to avoid long jump stitches.
- Satin stitch
- Long parallel stitches used for borders, lettering, and narrow shapes.
- Fill stitch
- Rows of stitches used to cover larger areas.
Common Machine Formats
- DSTTajima-compatible commercial machines
